Northbyrn River

The Northbyrn River is the division between Rjurik and Anuire, but the Rjurik people still live south of the Northbyrn as they have since shortly after Stjorndahl brought them south during the Bitter Winter.
The Northbyrn is not as long a river, nor fed by as many large streams as the Hjarring River or the great Ruide River, but it does drain the eastern third of the Silverhead Mountains into the Tael Firth and so carries a significant amount of water. Among the rivers the Rjurik know well, only the Hjarring is greater.
The river begins with the confluence of many smaller, fast moving streams feeding it from Udvika, Dharilein, and Angarr. These mountain streams are full of rocks, falls, and are not passable by boat, except by skilled rivermen over short distances. By the time it is known as the Northbyrn, it has mostly formed its middle reaches where the river flows over flatter land, meanders with a lower speed and deposits sediments from the mountains on the inside of bends. As the river passes beyond the woodlands of Saerskaap, it enters its mature reaches, slowly flowing, free of most sediment, and following its natural channel to the sea.
The Northbyrn enters the Tael Firth at Hollings Bay where the river water seems to add something vital to the waters, making this bay a rich fishing area. The early Rjurik found a good port, sheltered from storms, and built a town there. This place, called Hollingholmen grew into one of the greatest cities of the Rjurik. Today this port city is a gateway between the Northbyrn River and the sea.
The origin of the Stjordvik Traders lies on the Northbyrn, for they had commercial operations up and down the Northbyrn River in both Stjordvik and Dhoesone. For many years they were aaolfers in the old Rjurik mode of nomadic traders who seemed to have evolved from nomads to merchants, trading goods from one area to the next, but avoiding any serious impact on the land.
The much newer guild, Andien and Sons, has a few holdings mid-river on the Northbyrn, and the rest are across the Tael Firth in Talinie.
