A demesne is a portion of a noble's total lands which he holds immediately with no vassals or tenants. Any noble might, and probably does hold a demesne. The regent of a realm might hold a province directly. Even a knight who owns one manor will keep some acres to himself to be worked by serfs who owe him labor, or by paid laborers.
