A bailiff is an official who supervises a manor for a manorial lord who is not in residence. A lord who holds more than manor cannot reside at both of them (unless they are contiguous) and so must appoint a bailiff to oversee the others. A lord who is away from home, such as at war, at the court of his liege, or adventuring, must also appoint a bailiff. Family members can be good bailiffs, and leaving one's heir to perform this duty is good preparation. Serving as a bailiff is also a common duty of a knight.
Senechal, chatelain, castellan are other terms for bailiff. The Brecht term is Vogt.
