Giant ecology describes how giants fit into the ecosystem of Cerilia.
Giants are ancient beings, whose presence certainly pre-dates man and may pre-date elves as well. Some scholars believe there was a time when giants were the dominant race upon the land, after the time of dragons but before the preeminence of elves. The elves of Tuarhievel have stories from this time, but some believe them to be fanciful tales, rather than histories.
As ancient beings, in accord with the nature of the land, giants actually draw sustenance from the land itself. Sustained in part by the flows of Mebhaighl, they needed to eat much less than their great size would suggest. This means that the coming of men, with their destruction of the sources, and their interruption of the flows of mebhaighl disturbs the giants as much as it does the elves. This makes giants a natural adversary for men.
Further, what giants do eat are primarily animals. They hunted and maintained herds sustained by the lands, but with the coming of men, they have been happy to acquire men's cattle as well.
Today giants dwell in the wild places, far from the cities of men. They maintain large herds, often form alliances with smaller beings to provide grains, fruit, and vegetables, and provide military service in exchange.
