Wow. All this time I was right.

Now my only trouble is to determine whether the "magi" are priests or
wizards.

Uh, okay ... but then the contradiction does still exist - as the active
northmen of the time (c 500 AD) were not the Vikings who as you point
out were later in time c 700 AD. Although your point is still valid ...

Being that as it may however, it shows what they would become much
later. So while the Brechts as Hanseatics are misplaced in 500 AD, they
exist as proto-Hanseatics in the form of Saxons etc, and along the way
as you suggest, Vikings.

I rejected 700 AD in favor of 400-500 AD as a "best fit" period because
it does not have access to the advanced civilization of the Romans, and
is a period where there is Dark Age, and Medieval influences as well.

Hello!
Some day ago someone asked about levels of achievement (like knighthood)
for other characters, like guilders and wizards and I mentioned the
"Imperial Archmage" from the Book of Magecraft.

I was wrong.

The "Imperial Archmage" you can become is not mentioned in the BoM, but
in the Third Edition Birthright Rulebook (Draft 3.08) on p. 28 under
"The Imperial College"

"... To achieve the rank of MASTER, a journeyman mage must have at least
8 ranks of spellcraft, be capable of casting battle magics, and donate
to the college a "useful" magical item that they have personally
enchanted (or recovered). To achieve the ranke of Imperial Archmage, the
mage musts have at least 12 ranks of spellcraft, be capable of casting
realm spells, and perform a major service for the college (or empire)."

I was pretty sure that was where it was.
