RAW is commonly used in roleplaying for "Rules As Written", meaning that the rules should be followed based on what they say, and not expanded or interpreted beyond that meaning. No consideration should be made about why the rules were created or what the designer's intent was for the rules.

The alternative to RAW is RAI - Rules As Interpreted or Intended.
