Graf (feminine: Gräfin) is a title among the Brecht which identifies the ruler of a province. The word comes from the High Brecht word "graph", meaning "to write", suggesting an origin as an administrative post.
The adjectival prefix "Grafen" means "pertaining to a Graf" and is typically attached to the word in question. Such as, "Grafenburg" for the castle of the Graf.
A Graf's province is generally referred to as a Grafschaft.
