Necromancy

Necromancy is a discipline of magic that is commonly associated with spells relating to a person's life force, including death, the dead and the undead. A caster who specialises in it is known as a necromancer.

While necromancers and necromantic spells are not necessarily evil or have bad consequences (especially the Speak with Dead spell), there are some cultures who abhor them, sometimes violently. The Five Oaths of the Khinasi include "Never to use magic to raise or communicate with the dead", which is often interpreted to be a ban on all necromantic magic. A Paladin of Avani is expected to live by these oaths and some see their purpose to be preventing all necromancy. The Rjurik people are more lenient, believing that each person has their own Doom and that wisdom can be gained from the lessons of the dead. However, even the Rjurik rarely sanction the creation and use of the undead.

It is often overlooked that a number of clerical or druidic spells are also regarded as necromantic magic, e.g., Avani's Resurrection, Fertility. There is no specific cleric domain equivalent to necromancy, but there is the Death domain, which is only available to those who worship the Cold Rider or Azrai.
