Thread: Kingmaker

I don`t how many BR players have ever played Kingmaker, the combination card
and board game of the War of the Roses. Its a boat load of fun, and the
computer version of same was pretty decent, as far as computer opponants can
be competative. I mention this because Avalon Hill now has a link through
Wizards, and a trip to the WoC web site to see what was new ended up with my
reading strategy hints for using parliament in KM.
In some ways, Anuire, and to a lessor extent all of Cerilia, operates like
KM does. Players play noble factions, the throne is a pawn. Its not at all
a stretch to play BR like KM, and that`s really about all you can do in PBeM
games.
In any event, clicking over to review strategy articles for KM and other war
games might provide sparks and full blown ideas for BR DM`s.

I don`t know if that game is abandonware, but I found it for download
somewhere. It`s not bad, but I expected more from Avalon Hills. The
distribution of lands and titles in the beginning is great, but the
strategical movement and battles get boring after a time.

The heart of the game can`t be replicated on computer, it requires making
deals and backstabbing your allies to put your own candidate on the throne.
Without people behind the factions, its only a shadow of its former
table-top version. The same is true of Machiavelli and Diplomacy.

And the Gorgon`s Alliance as well.
Machiavelli and Diplomacy both supported hotseat multiplayer game, so
that way they managed to keep some of the flavor. I remember that my
friends and I spend hours with my c-64 and diplomacy. It`s funny to
remember that c-64 version had better graphics than PC version :-)
BTW, does anyone want to play Gorgon`s Alliance online?

I prefer the boardgame of Kingmaker, even though it usually ends up bogging
down about half way through, and doesn`t end for hours upon hours.
Although, wouldn`t you love to see a Kingmaker variant for either Anuire,
or for George R.R. Martin`s A Song of Ice and Fire?
