What is the pale thing behind the major headings (Home Forum Wiki Portals Downloads)? Is it shadowing gone wrong?

yes, supposed to be outer glows, but they got messed up when saving PNG..

I have been tossing with some ideas for a new design for the website.
attached is a preview.

its still a quickly drawn layout, but you get the idea.

i'd like to hear what you think about it.
