Castle Guide-Spartan/Ornate
The Castle Guide gives the castle's builder the option of speding more
time and money to make his castle very ornate or spending less for a
very spartan castle.
Why not make the same apply in BR. A very ornate castle could act like
a small palace and a spartan castle would give negative modifiers on
diplomacy actions if they are conducted in the castle.
Want some other opions/ideas on this, would add a little more to
building a castle.
I don't have the rulebook in front of me now but as I recall, a castle
costs the same no matter where you build it. So a castle in the middle
of the Harrowmarsh would caost the same as one in the province of
Anuire. This may deserve some cost/succes modifiers.

Actually, the castle construction costs are increased if you build in a
province of less than 4th level (this is said under the Build action).

I'm doing this in the Destiny of Regents PBeM game. I'm building a
combined castle/palace that will have the benefits of both structures (it
also is costing me twice as much). I agree that the castle book is a very
nice little supplement, although I have not actually tried to apply it to
BR yet.

I would apply the same modifiers to building a castle in such a terrain as
are applied to building roads in those terrains (which are mentioned
somewhere in the Rulebook, which I don't have handy).

The Guide has very spartan costing 25% less and very ornate costing 50%
more. To BR this constitutes less time since, as you all know, roll a
die to see how much progress is made. Thus less cost, less time.

Don't try to, a very spartan and very small castle in a light forest
near good reasorces (ie: decent conditions) came up close to 30 GBs.

Or maybee use the Castle Guide modifiers.
For Rulebook road modieiers:
Swamp: x3
Forest: x2 (none for elves)
High Mountian: not possible (x2 for dwarves)
Plains: none
For Castle Guide Modiers:
Swamp: x2
Forest:x1.5 to x2, depending on thickness
Plains:none
Comparion: As a DM I like the first set better since, after all, it is
already BR oriented.
Thats my resatement.

If you say this becase of my refernce to the Harrowmarsh, sorry I ment
it only to say a big swampy area.
Swamps can get up to level six but in the middle of a marsh but it is
hard to find resorces and/or travel so a catle should cost more. And it
might have a possibility of sinking (this is from Monty Python and the
Search for the Holy Grail AND Castle on the Moors castle guide example)
into the swamp.
Perhaps:
John rolls a 20 on his sucess roll for his castle and-
- -it is in a swamp and sinks
- -" " " a mountian range and a volcano erupts/major rockslide (or
avalanche)
- -" " along a river/coast and there is a big flood
To be fair PCs could get a chance to adventure and save the castle.
Talk to Nesire and get her to stop the flood, etc.
one last thing: bonues/reduced costs if there are roads or trade routes?
