Birthright spells » Spell:Sense Ore

Birthright spell

[top]Overview

This Brecht spell allows the caster to sense metal ores and is used by mine-owners to identify new sources of ore.

[top]Description

The caster holds a small piece of the relevant type of ore and meditates whilst in contact with the earth. They detect nearby ores first, and as they continue the spell detect ores further away. The wizard detects ores within 50 feet in one round, with the range increasing by 50 feet per minute thereafter.
The caster does not automatically sense the ore - they need to make a knowledge:geology, profession:miner, or other relevant skill check, with a DC of 10+1/10 feet of distance, -1/10 lbs of ore in a 10' cube.
Although the description indicates that only metal ores can be detected, the spell works on minerals, stones, earth, etc just as effectively - any natural feature of the land which the caster holds a sample of.

[top]Notes

This is a commercial spell, and has no combat application. A caster able to cast this spell can expect continual contracts from miners, masons and the like.

[top]Tips and Tactics

Like most commercial magic the spell is commonly known in Brechtür, and almost unused elsewhere. The Karamhul make heavy use of the spell (it is available to Karamhul priests as a L2 spell) . A Khinasi spell-caster would not dream of grubbing in the dirt in such a fashion, Anuirean magicians may aid guilds with the use of the spell, but a true Anuirean wizard again scorns such labor.

[top]AD&D spell version

As a priest/druid spell this would be Elemental (earth) sphere. Otherwise no changes are required.
