Birthright spell

[top]Overview

This spell sacred to Erik, Nesirie and Ruornil uses the natural mebhaighl of Aebrynis to disrupt the awnmebhaighl that empowers denizens of the Shadow World such as undead and demons.

[top]Description

This spell has no effect on living creatures native to Aebrynis, spirits of nature, elementals, and other 'naturally' magic beings. However creatures empowered by awnmebhaighl such as Demons, Seelie, Undead and the like suffer intense pain and damage. All such creatures within the area of effect suffer 1d8 damage per spell-caster level and are dazed for 1 round. A successful will save reduces the damage by half and negates the daze effect.
Where this spell totally destroys a creature of awnmebhaighl (i.e. does enough damage to reduce it to below -10 hp), that creature is either utterly destroyed, or completely driven from Aebrynis completely barring divine intervention. Where physical undead are so destroyed, the body they animated cannot be re-animated as undead for at least a month after the awnmebhaighl is purged from its system.
The spell can be used to create a single ray rather than an area effect, the ray has twice the effect, but affects only the first being it strikes.
The spell can only be cast in Aebrynis in an area where the source level is 1 or more. The maximum damage dice are capped at 3 times the source level.

[top]Notes

The spell is available to druids of Erik, and Priests of Nesirie and Ruornil. It is common amongst Sidhe spell-casters, but almost unknown amongst human wizards and sorcerers although those with a particularly strong connection to the natural world might be able to research it.

[top]Tips and Tactics

This spell is purely and simply an undead slayer, it is useful beyond simply causing damage in that it affects both tangible and intangible undead, and may prevent a vampire or similar undead from arising after a short period.

[top]AD&D spell version

The spell is of the Nature sphere, if cast as a priest spell.
