Spear carrier

A spear carrier is the term given to the youths who ran behind their master in battle carrying spare spears. As a result when their master had hurled his spear he could take one of those carried by the youth and thus continue to fight.
Spear-carriers are useful in campaigns where DMs enforce encumbrance rules strictly. While some players see a spear carrier as ablative armor others welcome them as followers and train the youths to become warriors in their own right and eventually henchmen.
A regent PC may have the child of another noble fostered with them, or made their squire, and thus gain a spear carrier. This both aids the PC - they have a chance to gain an ally in the future by treating the child well, and a threat - if the PC carelessly allows the spear carrier to be butchered by the foes that they face then the youth's parents will at the very least reduce their support for the PC, and may actively seek revenge.
PCs should beware; although most parents will send their child to serve the PC to gain favor, or give the youth a chance to 'learn from the best', some parents will do so to gain knowledge of the PC and their secrets - or to otherwise undermine the PC, not every fresh face holds an innocent smile.
