The following Orders of Knights are largely honorific, in that membership is given in recognition of achievements in differing areas. Numerous other Orders of Knights exist, many involving specific duties and obligations.
Anuirean Order of the Knights Companion of the Garter is the most senior and the oldest Anuirean chivalric order and was founded by Talien Roele I in 230 HC. The Order, consisting of the Emperor and never more than twenty-five Knights Companions, is reserved as the highest reward for loyalty and for military merit. It is the most coveted and prestigious Order in the empire. The Knights Companions are replaced only upon death or disgrace. Vacancies are filled as they arise. The personal selection of each new member by the Emperor (nowadays the Chamberlain) is marked with a magnificent feast at the imperial palace in the City of Anuire. The Knights are entitled to wear a blue velvet mantle with a garter on the left shoulder, lined with white sarcanet. (The garter represents one of the straps that hold the breastplate in place).
the Gorgon invaded Anuire. In the bloodiest day since Deismaar the Gorgon razed the Mhor?s castle. During the fall of the castle Aemon Tangaeryn, the Mhor?s castellan and commander of the Mhor?s household guard, confronted the Gorgon while attempting to ensure the safe withdrawal of the Mhor?s family and household. A blow from Raesene snapped the garter strap holding Aemon?s breastplate in place, leaving him unprotected. The 25 surviving members of the household guard rushed forward to defend their commander.
Rising to his feet Aemon challenged Raesene to single combat and wounded Raesene four times before dying. The other members of the household guard refused to give way before the Gorgon and all fell before his sword, their sacrifice ensured the Mhor?s family escaped to safety. The following year, Talien I created the Order of the Knights Companion of the Garter to venerate the courage and sacrifice of Aemon Tangaeryn and his fellow knights. The Order takes its name from the breastplate strap sundered by the Gorgon?s weapon that left Tangaeryn unprotected but undaunted.
Since the death of Michael Roele, the order has become almost hereditary, with the heir of each knight of the Companion of the Garter assuming their parents place barring some exceptional circumstance when their parent passes away.
