Njall Olvisson

Typical Dialogue:
"Erik have mercy! The realm needs strength, and yet the eorls quarrel with the king and deny him any means to rule. Yea, in good faith he is but little to admire, but he is the only one who can lead the realm, for the eorls will not follow one another. So please you, if he were worth defending I would quarrel myself with old Olfjor and Guthrim. But as it is, dependent as I am on the finances of the other eorls, I'll keep my peace."
"Erik smite them! Those Rjuvik are nothing but bandits."
"The druids have their own politics just like the rest of us. Some favor the Oaken Grove, others the Emerald Spiral. Some favor the king, others the eorls. Any one of them is as good as the next because all of them, bless 'em for it, will fight the Blood Skullers."

Biography:

Eorl Njall has more cattle than subjects in Hjorvaal. The province lacks any settled farms, though many herds are here. The herdsmen live under the stars during good weather and winter in Arvaald or Namverg. Njall, a dozen housecarls, and a few mountainmen are the only real permenant residents. There is a town in the middle of the province, but its mostly deserted in winter. Even in summer it still only numbers a little over a hundred. It serves as a depot for trade beween the herders and rest of the realm.

Njall's family have ancient roots in Hjorvaal, but his housecarls are mostly traditional, tribal warriors who have left their tribes, mostly for not getting along, and come to regard Njall as their leader. Njall himself is a rustic, unlettered, and without the refinements of his social class. He is a powerful warrior and given his company, that matters more than most anything else.

His father, Olvis Asbjornsson, was likewise a powerful warrior without the refinements of nobility. Even so he attracted the attentions of Isagel Ylvarrik, who seduced him and established source holdings in his family's realm in Hjorvaal. After a year, Olvis rejected Isagel and she swore to possess him again. Olvis took to adventuring to keep away from Isagel for a while. On his travels, he encountered the stunning beauty, Snaewitta Gauksdotter, and instantly fell in love. Snaewitta's family, however lived under a curse and within three years, her mother, father, and two brothers were dead. Alone in the world except for her half-brother, Guthrim Gauksson, she was kidnapped by men in service of Isagel and put under a spell from which she would not wake, and concealed in a ruin. Eventually Olvis found Snaewitta and woke her with a kiss. They married and Njall was born a year later.

Njall also made a good match in a bride, marrying Anna Bjondrig, the sister of Count Thjobald Bjondrig and neice of Eorl Skjada Njalgrimsson. Anna spends about ten months of the year with Njall, but spends the two harshest months of winter with her brother Thjobald and her aunt Bestla Dagmaersdotter. Two years ago, Anna extended her stay in castle Skjadaby through spring when she gave birth to a young son, Rikhard.
