Typical Dialogue:
"Well met good sir. What news of the deer in the forest? I have found few stags of good size, and have very seriously considered purchasing an estate for no other purpose than to encourage the growth of well formed deer for a more pleasing hunt."
"These knights of Haelyn are good fellows and ride hard. Were it not so impolitic, I should very much like to ride with them more often."
"You dull, unfeeling barren ignorance! Tempt me not, lest I beat you bloody. I ordered the distribution of the funds to the local temples and so it shall be done. Such wealth does no good to anyone buried in our treasure chests. Let the money do good for the church of Sera and the people of Cariele. I declare that such capital well applied will make us all in Mhelliviene as wealthy as the Mohr."

[top]Biography

Kalder van Lausrüf is descended from the exiled Herren of Lausrüf in Kiergard. His ancestors fled to Massenmarch, and Kalder spent the early years of his adulthood as a soldier in the Swordhawk's Wings, his so-called cavalry formations. After serving several years, he moved on to Grevesmühl hoping to establish his own Herrshaft (Lordship) there. Unfortunately the Herzog in that realm mismanages his realm to such an extant that Kalder was forced to abandon the effort.

He traveled to Berhagen when fighting with Rzhlev promised opportunity. He was given a patent to raise a unit of cavalry and did so by traveling to Müden and hiring away their horsemen. After seeing action for several seasons, the rulers of Berhagen and Rzhlev ended the latest round of fighting, and withdrew Kalder's patent. He led his soldiers back to Müden, where they re-joined the count's mounted troops there. He continued on to Anuire hoping to learn their secrets of mounted combat.

His devotion to Lady Luck combined with his career as a soldier made it easy to approach the Knights of Cuiraécen, who identified with his devil-may-care attitude on horseback. In Avanil he was recruited by Temias Coumain to lead a company of light cavalry which the Celestial Jewel of Sarimie offered to provide to Alamie. After the expiration of the contract with the duke of Alamie, Temias arranged for Kalder to take up a position with Larra Nielems, the Most Sacred Minister of the Northern Reformed Church of Sarimie. Typically the temples of Sarimie are only able to raise scout units that look suspiciously like bandits, so Larra jumped at the chance to include Kalder in her organization. Given that the Reformed Church of Sarimie is the only temple with any political influence in Cariele, Larra was able force Entier Gladanil, the count of Cariele, to rely on Kalder as its highest ranking captain of horse.

In this way, Larra is able to prevent the followers of Haelyn from regaining some of their influence through their indispensability in military matters. Since Cariele is not a warlike state, Kalder spends most of his time administering the temples of Mhelliviene and hunting, a recreation that gives him easy access to the social circles of Haelyn supporters. Though Kalder is not particularly religious, he does have a natural affinity for the faith of his homeland, and as Sacred Minister of Mhelliviene he makes a larger income than he ever did as a mercenary captain.
