Delete tagging cheat sheet

Template:help:deleting pages quickref

Deleting pages is a sensitive subject in Wikis. Often, an editor will choose to integrate the contents of some page into another more relevant page and make the old one a redirect to the new one. But in some cases, outright deleting the page is justified.

This article briefly explains how deletion tags work, and what they look like. Before you start tagging articles for deletion however, you will want to read Policy/Deleting.

[top]Nominating pages for deletion

Pages that users want to nominate for deletion use the {{Delete}} template (see below) at the top of the article:

You normally do not use this template directly. It gets pulled in by Delete.

This article is nominated for deletion. Please vote on this article's  discussion  page.

Please do not mark this terminate or remove this message until the voting has met the Deletion policy requirements.

This template adds the article to the Candidates for deletion category.
The accompanying  discussion  page will use the {{Delete/Vote}} template:

This article is nominated for deletion.   The policy requires a consensus vote: please vote or comment below!   Please do not mark this for termination or remove this message until the voting has met Deletion policy requirements.   If one side stays in the lead by three votes for five days, that side wins the vote!

How to place your vote:
  • Simply click [Edit] in the upper-right hand corner of the Votes section, and type exactly one of the following below the other present votes:

{{vote|Keep|~~~~|your notes or leave empty}}, or
:{{vote|Delete|~~~~|your notes or leave empty}}
  • Then click Save page and you are done!

If you are voting in favor of deletion, please check up on what is linking to the article!

When one side is winning:
  • If you are adding the winning vote (or if you notice that one side has won but 5 days has not yet passed):
  • : Change the {{Delete/Vote}} on this talk page to {{Delete/Closing}}
  • : (this is optional - it just makes closing votes easier to find; if you are uncertain, leave it at {{Delete/Vote}})

  • If Keep has won, and 5 days has passed:
    1. Remove {{Delete}} from the article
    2. Remove {{Delete/Vote}} from this talk page. Do not remove the votes!

If necessary, you may archive votes to Help:Deleting pages/Archivevote.
This template adds the discussion page to the Votes for deleting category.
You normally do not tag a page Delete/Vote manually. Rather, you use {{
subst
:Delete/Talk}}
, which pulls in Delete/Vote and adds a voting booth beneath it where people can actually place their votes:

;Delete:
[list=1][*] Delete Mikk 02:26, 24 May 2006 (EDT) - (see comments)
[/redirect]
;Keep:
[list=1][*] Keep Fandyllic 06:14, 24 May 2006 (PDT) - (i disagree, it's useful to me. i will add links to it if it is not deleted)
[/redirect]

[top]Comments

This article has no useful information in it and is not linked to by anything. It is also uncategorized. It should be deleted. --Mikk 02:26, 24 May 2006 (EDT)
You are automatically registered as the first vote to delete.

Hint: You can also use {{
subst
:Delete/Talk|}} to provide a reason for your vote without having to re-edit the page.

[top]Speedy Deletion

The speedy deletion policy is at Policy/Speedy deletion.
Some articles may be marked with {{Speedydelete}} for "speedy deletion" by an admin. The banner looks like this:

This article is nominated for speedy deletion.

Please see the deletion policy. You will want to check if anything links here.

''This article does not have any content. Nothing links here. --Mikk 08:49, 29 August 2006 (EDT)
This template adds the article to the Articles for speedy deletion category.
Please add a line below the {{speedydelete}} tag explaining why you think the page should be deleted.

Hint: You can also use {{
subst
:sd|}} to automatically add the tag, your reason, and your signature.
