Typical Dialogue:

"Who, I ask, but the knights and dear nobles of our beloved realm give us justice and protection? Who will show the guilds their place and end our quarrels with the druids, elves, and the mage?"

"I greatly admire the tenacity with which the good hierarch urges the temple's causes. Some in the nobility, however, feel that his zeal for virtue has lead him to overlook certain points. I would like to indicate these points now to Your Grace."

"Siobhan is as bad as old Torias, for these are both ideologues and do not understand compromise. I urge you to be wary of them both. The realm is most secure in the hands of men of patience and experience."

[top]Biography:

Harrin Stalban is the Viscount Grimsay.
Upcountry in Greensward, where the nights are colder, lies the old city of Grimsay. The Lord of Grimsay has been Harrin now for some time. For many years he was also the royal justice of the peace. He was scholarly and fair, shrewd and intemperate by turns, and well regarded as a man of integrity. When an outraged plaintiff accused him of accepting a bribe, a minor scandal erupted, and Lord Harrin stepped down. Three years later, sheriffs in another county sized papers of the Fine Crafters of Timber & Minerals which proved that the guild had conspired to remove Lord Harrin on invented charges to get him out of the way for guild developments he was investigating. Harrin was vindicated, but by then everyone outside of Grimsay had forgotten him. Harrin has resigned himself to the end of his political career and devoted himself to caring for the people of upcountry Greensward. He encouraged investment, provided justice, and gave every attention to his people.
When Thuriene Donalls became ruler of Talinie, Lord Harrin looked on uneasily from the sidelines. The new Supreme Hierarch of the Northern Imperial Temple was inexperienced and seemed to rely on Torias Griene to a great extent. The influence of the Hierarch in state affairs concerned Harrin and he began to quietly look at Griene. His doctrines of hard work as a road to virtue had created an opening for the guilds to exploit both the people and the lands of Talinie. Harrin regarded Griene as too useful to the same guilds who not only exploited Talinie, but has ruined his political career with lies. He looked for a counterweight to Griene in government, but found none. He took an active role in advocating policies different from Griene.
Among the rising opponents of Torias Griene Lord Harrin was a natural and early leader. Though others have risen since, Harrin, recently made Viscount, remains a leader of the noble opposition to the Hierarch of the Northern Imperial Temple. The Thane seems to trust Harrin. He is too direct to serve as a diplomat, but Thuriene employs him as advisor, messenger, and observer. Recently she has increased the protection for Harrin as her enemies might have marked the Viscount of Grimsay for assassination.
