[top]Biography:

Gilgaed Flaertes was the Duke of Tuornen before the accession of his daughter, Laela Flaertes.
His mother was Telaena Flaertes, and his father Vaeran Tuor.
Upon his fifteenth birthday, Gilgaed Flaertes began his long rule of Tuornen. As had his mother, and grandfather, Daulton Alam, before him, Gilgaed trusted Braedonnal Tuare to command his armies. But unlike his predecessors, Gilgaed ruled with caution, debate, diplomacy and management, rather than sword and flame. Within two years of his coronation, Gilgaed foiled an assassination attempt single handedly. Unsure who to trust, Gilgaed told no one of his suspicions, but had the confidence and intelligence to handle the matter himself.
In 502 MR, Gilgaed surprised his duchy with the announcement that he would marry Fiarelle Llyrandor, an Elven noblewoman of Tuarhievel. The news struck the land like a thunderbolt, since the constant threat of Rhuobhe Manslayer had long soured human-elf relations. But Gilgaed and Fiarelle had fallen in love during the course of a long correspondence originally begun to establish relations between Tuornen and Tuarhievel. Their alliance proved successful. Fiarelle's presence in Gilgaed's court did much to sooth anti-elf sentiment among the Tuors.
Frustrated by his Duke's cautious avoidance of war, Braedonnal turned restless. He pined to harry the Manslayer, but Gilgaed forbade it. Braedonnal became opinionated and insulting in court, often provoking duels which resulted in the maiming of his opponents. At last he slew Colier Simon Tuor in an argument over reunification with Alamie.
Gilgaed had to punish his lieutenant. Both the matriarch of Tuor, Odelia Tuor, and her brother Vaeran Tuor clamoured for Braedonnal's execution. Gilgead's father and aunt were a powerful influence on him. Meanwhile, the Militant Order of Cuiraécen argued that the matter was just an affair of honour and properly settled. This cost the Militant Order its following in Tuor's Hold. Gilgaed recognized that his lieutenant was a problem, but did not consider him guilty of murder. So Gilgaed banished Braedonnal for twenty years. Braedonnal bore himself with dignity as he left for Tuarhievel.
With Braedonnal gone, in 519, Rhuobhe Manslayer unleashed the gheallie Sidhe on Tuornen, killing every human they could overtake.
Taking advantage of Tuornen's distress, Alamie attacked, hoping to break the Flaertes and reclaim Tuornen.
Gilgaed considered the moment desperate and pardoned Braedonnal. The elf returned ten years to the day, and resumed command as if he had not been gone a month.
