Wet wool is pounded together for a prolonged period - often by a hammer driven by a water wheel. As the wool threads are pounded together the small scales on the wool inter-lock, and felt is formed as a solid mass. Felt making and Paper making are in many respects very similar in their underlying principles.
The felt is then pressed to extract most of the water and create an even thickness of fabric. If the felt is to be coloured then a dye or bleach is added during the pounding or pressing process, or a separate dying stage may be added.
Felt can be used to make tents which are warm and dry, and any number of other materials, it is not as strong as cloth but is reasonably durable against general wear and tear.
A relatively primitive form of cloth making, in areas where weaving is known felt making tends to be relegated to traditional uses, use by the poor, or entirely abandoned.
