A cottager or cotter is an agricultural worker who lives in the countryside on a very small piece of land. He very likely works for others part time in addition to working his own land, which he rents or owns. A cottager has a plot as small as a single garden or as large as 5 acres, far too small for subsistence, and works as additional labor for larger land-holders, often yeoman or free-holders to make ends meet. Cottagers may also work for craftsmen as laborers or the lord as militia for pay.
Craftsmen themselves often function as cottagers, living with a garden or up to 5 acres, but they are not cottagers, because their farm activity is mere supplement to their primary craft working.
Cottagers are part of the peasant society and fit within their mores and values.
