framed|The Carrack "Größte Erfolg"

A carrack is a three- or four-masted sailing ship developed in Brechtür over the past two centuries. It has a high rounded stern with an aftcastle and a forecastle and bowsprit at the stem. It is square-rigged on the foremast and mainmast and lateen-rigged on the mizzenmast. The square sails offer speed, the lateen sails, maneuverability. Carracks are proper ocean-going ships; large enough to be stable in heavy seas, and roomy enough to carry provisions for long voyages. The carrack represents the state of the art in Brecht shipbuilding, and require a renaissance level of technology to even construct.
The carrack is the choice high seas beast of burden and has been described as the "perfected transport ship".
  • It offers the space for crew, provisions and also cargo.
  • They are virtually impregnable to attack from small craft, such as those employed by Rjurik or Vos pirates.
  • Their ability to carry cargo and provisions make them independent of ports en route, and so they have a longer range using the most efficient route. This is especially useful in the east, where Vos do not welcome Brecht ships.
  • The combination of four sails allows for a fair degree of flexibility - the large square sails provide propulsion, but are reduced in size during storms. The smaller sails at bow and stern allow for maneuvering, and the lateen sails allow for sailing across the wind.
