I always thought that it would be cool to create little clans in BR. For example, a large group of dwarves that control several units and are located in places such as five peaks, or giant downs. I dont know i just think that it would be fun to involve them because it would bring more excitement to BR. Or if your a DM and you just want to raise havock on some regents. Just an idea.

Indeed. I worked out all the clans in Baruk-Azhik for my campaign. These
clans had members throughout Cerilia, although in each of the official
realms, there was only 80% overlap, so each realm was missing some of the
    common clans elsewhere.

I put a few dwarves everywhere you might expect to see dwarves. There were
three clans represented in Avanil in the Seamist Mountains. They allowed
the Prince of Avanil to form dwarven units. He normally keps one raised to
guard the Seamists against Rhuobhe, and is capable of raising three units.
The current Marshal of Baruk-Azhik IMC is a former mercenary captain who
served in Avanil`s army leading mercenary and local dwarves in war against
    Boeruine.

In the realm part of the game, I had nobles, guilds, temples, guilds, and
clans. The clans were a kind of unifying principle. Each clan had a
dominant profession, which meant that there were strong guild-clan
connections. One of the key guilds, the mining guild, included the
Rockhammers, the Earthkores, the Ironveins, and the Stonefists. Smaller
clans like the brewers were entirely composed of one clan, the Sweetbrew.
There were a few brewers who were from other clans, but the vast majority of
the brewers were Sweetbrew. The neat thing was, there was another group of
community leaders to consider. The guilds were organized by the master
guilder, Diirk Watershold, but the clans had no such organization. Or
rather, it was the Overthane`s job to provide that over-arching leadership.

That was pretty much what i was talking about,, we have however came up with militia's in desperate times. May not be that wonderful but when wars are tight they can help alot. You would think that there loyalty would have to be high though or why would some commoners form one for you? But we all kind of have the basic idea.

I used the miner`s card from Khurin Azur as my default dwarven militia. I
figure that the dwarves have a system of rotation to conscript and
re-conscript dwarves for military service. Given their long lives, dwarves
may owe 6 months of service every several years, over and over again.

In addition, I had three war clans, Thornblade, Ironstroke, and the crossbow
clan, Truestrike. They comprised the regular standing army. Unlike many
clans, the war clans were exogamous, seeking husbands and brides from other
clans to marry into the war clans in order to make up numbers lost in
    combat.

In lord of the rings they talk about uniting all of the dwarves from the four corners of the world. it might be interesting to have a great need arise. were all the dwarves are needed to wage war. Our you could have a small dwarves setelment overun. But it just so happens that this setelment holds a important member of a dwarven noble clan. or it holds a hight ranking priest of mordin. A strong regent who cleans up a small dwarf law holding could all of a sudden find 100 dwarven units breathing down there neck

I tried this kind of stuff. I had orogs in the Stonecrowns break through
and dwarves in the Mhoried/Cariele region asked for help. The PC regent of
Baruk-Azhik sent an embassy to see things for themselves. They were
authorized to spend up to 3 GB in assistance. They carried letters of
credit from the Royal Guild of Baruk-Azhik.

I placed a lost artifact from Khurin-Azur in the Silverhead Mountains and
used it to run the Giantdowns plus the artifact adventure. The PC regent
didn`t go, just the rest of the party.

Once I used a divine gate to send the only two characters who made it to one
session across the continent to Daikhar Zhigun to recover the body of a
dwarven champion and give him a proper burial.

As far as the Overthane was concerned, I had to bring trouble to him. He
    never went further than Kiergard.

I see that you guys have the basic idea, most true BR fans are familiar with making these kind of things up. But i only used dwarves as an example, but militia's can be very useful indeed. In my current setting I dont really have to worry too much about it. i am in control of 2 domains and am fairly wealthy. But maybe in the future,, clans, militia's or such will be of great use.

well, if you mean ideas,, then all you have to do is talk to any BR DM,, they usually have thought about this at least once. Or maybe you could talk to people working on 3E. and see what they think. As for me i just made up stuff with my group. we like taking this game to the limit and changing what we think works better. or just to make the game more exciting and realistic.
