I was recently told that the provinces of Elevesmiere, Nabhriene, and Tuor's Hold were originally part of Avanil since Imperial times untill as recently as a few hundred years ago.

If so then how did they become a part of Alamie/Tuornen?

I was told to check out the Tuornen sourcebook, but alas I am without. Would someone be so kind as to relay the gist of what the publication says about Avanil.

As far as I am aware (and I do own the Tuornen sourcebook) this is incorrect. The Prince of Avanil has law holdings in the three provinces you mentioned, but to the best of my knowledge those three provinces have always been part of Alaime/Tuornen. There is nothing in the soucebook that would indicate otherwise, although the Prince does appear to have a rather cosy relationship with the Tuor family, something that would need to be watched by any ruler of Tuornen, especially if they were trying to stay neutral in the conflict between Boeruine and Avan.

And at the same token Aeric Boeruine has also quite some law in Tuornen.
It is simply impossible to tax Tuornen properly without the consent from
both Aeric and Darien. I see this in my campaign as a way to make sure
that the duchess of Tuornen stays neutral or face the consequences.

That`s based upon the map in the Iron Throne, where
Avanil seems to control a large portion of southern Tuornen.

Maybe it was given to Alams as some dowry before Tuornen broke off?

I personally think that the nobles who live in the provinces on the
Avanese border have sworn fealty to Avanil, in lieu of a strong central
rule. A similar thing occurs along the Boeruinean border, with the
nobles their (represented by the law holdings) being sworn directly to
Boeruine instead of to the Dukes/Duchesses of Tuornen. Perhaps these
nobles traditionally were always vassals of their respective
    "superpower".

This divided loyalty within Tuornen was a major theme in the
closer-scale BR campaign I ran last year.
