Nobility, Honor, Sayim

I think it would be interesting to have a system of honor for BR. For the
most part, I think that only the Khinasi and the Anuireans would use it to
its fullest extent. These two cultures seem to have what amounts to the
familiar honor codes you see all over the place.

Take seven traits, I`m using the same seven in Rokugan, but their names will
change from culture to culture. Lets call them reputation aspects.

Courage Courage Integrity
Compassion Compassion Compassion
Courtesy Humility Hospitality
Honor Nobility Grace
Sincerity Faith Sincerity
Duty Duty Obligation

Basically, when you perform an act that is observed publicly (outside your
adventuring party) that reflect your character`s attitude towards one of
these reputation aspects, you gain or lose a point or two. Many actions
would be neutral, because you are expected to do them, but failing to do
them might cost you a point. Helping a lady down from her horse may be an
expected action, and so performing it earns you no reputation. Ignoring the
lady`s dismount might cost you a point. Acts of considerable import might
be worth 3 or 4 points, and certain very significant acts might be worth
even more.

One question is, if anyone was to use such a system, are they interested in
Rokugan-like honor ranks? After all, having a total of 10 points could be
used just as they are with the honor rank system in Rokugan, we just know
where they are distributed.

One of the features I like is that you know right off what NPC`s think of a
player`s character. If the guilder Gunther von Hallstadt is known for his
Honesty and Sincerity, his reputation for fair dealing preceeds him. That
fact that he has a low score in duty and compassion means you won`t get much
leeway if you have trouble meeting your end of the contract. "We agreed
that I would be paid in rubies. If you want to pay me in gold, it will cost
you more."

Dragon #299 doesn`t fit into my system quite as nicely as I would like, but
its not all that bad. My own Chivalry traits were ment to reflect a more
Anuirean set of values. Nevertheless, the system described on pp. 30-1 is
as good as any, and has the value of being published.
