I know I'm behind the times...
But I just finished the last book of the Game of Thrones story. And I do have to say the political in-fighting and the whole "keeping the blood lines strong" in there really lends it's self to understand Birthright. If you have not given it a shot, go for it.

Wasn't that the one about the four children of the Duke of York and how they grew up to become Kings of England?

Game of Thrones
I think these are great reads, and a awesome TV show to watch if you like Birthright, I still can't believe that they have never re-published this fantastic setting.
