I'd expect that issue to be built into the warcard results - against elites getting +3 attack vs defense should be difficult. By contrast against rabble it should be reasonably common.
I'm assuming of course the 'D' result are mainly at the top end of the results although the card in the rulebook had one at +1, one at +2 and one at +3...

I agree with Andrew, however, from a home point of view, if you have mercs going up against elites, I would tend to give the elites their attack before they`re swept away.

Sorry for replying to an old thread...
I'd go for logic. Two units clashing together, both should have the right to attack. You don't just stand there while the attacker bashes you around. It would be different if there were archers who deal a devastating blow to an infantry that couldn't attack back since they are 200 ft away.
And for the difference between types like mercenaries or elites, I'd throw bonuses or penalties.Rey M. - court wizard of Tuarhievel

Actually Rey, I'm glad you did, Jaleela has some good ideas that I will be considering carefully in my never ending quest to create a good mass combat system.

Based on my own personal experience doing full contact reenactment combat, when two units meet, even if one gets overwhelmed within seconds of the initial clash, both sides are fighting and both sides are losing men, even if the winning side only loses a half dozen.
