Brectur Bards instead of Theives?
What do people think would be the repercussions of changing Brectur regents to be Bards class-wise rather than thieves? (and giving them full regency for Guilds). Charming, influencial swashbucklers, talented in rooting out secrets and rousing and manipulating the mob. Well educated, even having a smattering of spells. Rather than the neutral herald and advisor from the book, but the same game mechanic wise.
It suits the mental image I have of a dashing Brectur regent more than the theif class. What am I missing?

So rather than reflecting the Hanseatic League and their power in trade, the Brecht prefer to reflect the minnesingers who were known for their following of courtly love (e.g. the real Ulrich von Liechtenstein)?

Since you are referring to "thieves" then you must be talking in 2nd ed viewpoints.
So - 2nd ed BR bards were specifically stated as not being regents (well very, very much discouraged) due to their need for a "bardic college" which would not accept one destined to be a regent.
They also got spells, albeit charm, illusion and divination only - which doesn't quite work well with one governing "guilds".
Bards in general have a tendency to "wander" and are not well suited for having "roots" in any type of organization.
IMO change it to "guilder" and you are good to go. Guilder was a Brecht-specific class anyway.Duane Eggert

However there is a Bard Regent. Look at Tuornen's Regent.
