some quick plot hooks for a Curiceacen Pally?

I've got to run a solo mission for a player on saturday and the brain isn't firing much lately. It's a 1 level paladin of the storm and wargod and she'll be establishing a temple in Endier but I need some sort of side story that might have a little combat, maybe a little problem solving, etc....

    Any ideas?

Act 1: A priest of the Northern Imperial Temple enters town and preaches a rigorous work ethic as the best way to serve Haelyn and cultivate the discipline to do one's duty. He should be a little over the top and seem to imply that serfdom should be hard and brutal for the good of the serf's relationship with He Who Judges All. He argues that Haleyn turns away many followers for their indiscipine during life, and these souls serve as the serfs of the afterlife. Whatever you need to provoke your Paladin of Cuiraecen. Should this priest discover the allegence of our hero, he regards him as an anarchist, enemy of the social order, and destroyer of all that is worthy. The purpose of this scene is to put the player into the mind of a champion of freedom against opporession, and to allow townsfolk to see him do so. At the end of Act 1, a group of three families approach our hero and tell him of slavery in Anuire! Their sons have been siezed by unknown agents and sold into servitude. Horror!

Act 2: Assuming our hero looks into the matter, there are rumors of slavers, though officialdom in Endier denies such dark trade in human flesh. As soon as her begins investigating docks, wearhouses, and the like, he encounters Katell Bellamie (presumably from the town in Tournen across the river), a 1st level wizard and devote of Ruornil. She is lovely, but obsessed with locating her dear brother whom she is sure is captured by slavers in Endier. She should prove helpful to our hero in collecting information about the slavers. Our hero might admire her tenacity or some other characteristic. However just as the pair are getting close to locating a base or key figure, Katell is killed while performing rituals to the moon. Her neck is broken. Someone snapped her head forcefully to the left.

Act 3: As our hero continues alone, he has the opportunity to free a slave, but the slave resists being freed, even fighting our hero. Soon he witnesses a fully vestmented priest of Belinik thanking the shipmaster for his new recruits. This is a plot twist as our hero discovers that these are not captives sold into slavery, but recruits into a secret cult of Belinik.

Act 4: Confront or expose the cult leader.

Act 5: The cell is destroyed, but captured evidence suggests other cells are active in the area. Somehow the hero discovers that it was Katell's brother that broke her neck. He thinks that both she and the paladin are weak. Perhaps we see him again several adventures down the road. Let's call him Gaël Bellamie.

One other thing you could do is have a few of them actually sold to the denizens of the Spiderfell. You could have the player scout for the missing persons and then plan a rescue attempt. Preferably before they captives are killed, re-sold, or eaten.

    Some thoughts.

The setting of your paladin's campaign can itself lead to a bunch of plot material.

Where - who rules there. What is the dominant Religion.
What local lords follow this religion.
What will their reaction be to Cuiracean worship.
    Do some want change.
    Is the religious heirarchy corrupt.

What is the status of Paladins in the local legal system? What powers do they have under the local law.
(Some areas the paladin may have Judge, Jury and executioner powers i.e. a mid level paladin may have all these powers in a theocracy of this own religion - or if the religion is very powerful in the local area)
Do these powers extend to the paladin of Cuiracean in that area under some forgotten law. (or the wording of the law may be Paladin's of Holy orders)

Is at the very least their word very respected in court.

What is the relationship of local Paladin orders with the Local Clerics - and what is the local clerical orders standing with the Central church.

Is trial by combat an option (Duelling) and under what circumstances is it allowed (fun for Paladin to step in on behalf of peasants vs the cruel local Lord )

I had some fun with a corrupt local Haelyn High Priest being in bed with one of the local Lords (no his allignment doesn't have to be Lawful good) and calling off local paladins from duelling on behalf of impoverished people vs this lord for kickbacks etc (and other sneaky political skullduggery). Wow look the local lord funded a new chapel!

A "rogue" cuiracean paladin can't easily be called off by Haelyn's priests...
(who in 2nd ed rules could be Chaotic good )

If you flesh out a bit of local law and politics and the rules of the Paladin order in relationship with them it can be a lot of fun to negotiate (or smash) your way through some interesting scenarios that can be developed.
