[Birthright: the lost]
Here's an interesting question:
In the various and sundry Birthright books and adventures, there
have been refrences made the The Lost, the first humans that Azrai taught
the secrets of true magic to. If I remember, these refrences were in The
Cities of the Sun, The Abominations of Cerilia, and possibly the Book of
Magecraft. Now, here's where it gets fun:
1) Did humans not know about wizardly power before Azrai?
2) What could the nature of the "True MAgic" be, both imaginative
and in game stats?
3) What (if any) connections lies between the Cold Rider, the Lost,
and the possibility of Azrai's return?
I have a few ideas on the subject, but they dwell primarially on the
nature of the lost and who they were, and which ones survived.
It should be very interesting to get opinions on this.

> As far as I know, the answer is no. Humans didn't need wizardly
powers, since they created spells straight from the gods themselves. I think
that Azrai taught a select few (i.e., the Lost) the secrets of magic. However,
there is no reason why they should be able to use those secrets. In the
Rulebook it states "a character must have the stuff of magic within him to
wield true wizardly might" or something like that. This is where we need a
rules lawyer or a designer to tell us exactly what the Lost are. If they were
some type of magical beings, then there is no question they can wield magic.
However, if they were not, it draws into question of whether or not humans
have to be blooded to wield true magic.

> True Magic is the type of magic that requires more power than most
humans have. That is why it is required that humans be blooded to wield this
might. Elves and half-elves are innately magical, so they can wield these
magics. Mystics and Diviners and Illusionists for that matter cannot wield
those spells. My guess is their type of magic relies on mind and spirit. True
Mages must rely on their power as magical individuals to power their spells.

Lost, or Azrai for that matter. I know a lot of people do. I play the Cold
Rider as a type of powerful demigod who is actually the power behind the Shadow
World.
As for the Lost, those who are left are definately trying to find a way
to bring back their old master. However, there are very few Lost left,
although those that are, are very powerful. In CotS, One of the rulers in
Khinasi is one of the Lost. He's a 19th level wizard. In Blood Enemies, there
is reference that there is a possibility that the Raven may be one of the Lost.
However, I doubt this to be the case since that particular awnshegh is also a
warrior, and not of archmage status (which is a criteria in my campaign for
being one of the Lost.
I do have a Lost NPC in my campaign, but he has no effect on game as
yet, and his history is shrouded in mystery.
