    Jousting Rules

Under "Jousting Pass" in my last Post I said: "Contestant 2 then adds thier
own Strength damage modifier to thier roll." I just wanted to clarify that
adding this modifier will not cause a check to fail, it will just make the
successful number higher. Sorry for any confusion.

Actually I left a perfect opening for them. As with the individual rules of
Jousting Tournys, specialized Lances and Armor came in so many varities that
I left it up to the DM to decide what, if any, were available. As for what
effect they have on the Joust roll, specialized Lances will give an
appropriate bonus to Strength checks, and specialized armor or saddles will
give a bonus to Dexterity checks. Again what if any bonuses are given by
these items must be determined by the DM. But I would limit these, as
Jousting in BR is more like the first original Jousting competitions in our
world. They are brutal and are still considered the sport of manly heroes,
not just of the nobility as it later became. So many of these pieces of
specialized equipment should not be in use yet. As for tactics in Jousting,
well again it would have taken a chart or two to give modifiers for each
tactic. Instead I allowed for those with Profiency and Speciality in Lance
to gain a bonus during a Joust, assuming they would use the appropriate
tactics as the oppertunities arise. Those unskilled with the Lance must just
make do. The object was to dissolve the rather complex action of Jousting
down to a few simple rolls. This way Jousting could be used during a session
and could be resolved within a resonable amount of time. I still allowed for
enough "personal" factors from each Contestant to affect the outcome that I
believe its as detailed as you want to get.
