And thereby a poor release schedule for 1997 gets even worse.

I love BR, but I would say that its odds of surviving into 1998 are
not good. The wargame aspect is too convoluted to appeal to the
general role-playing crowd, and isn't complex enough to appeal to the
    true wargamers.

I'll buy these (and anything else that gets published) of course, but
that probably won't be enough to save the line.

Relaunches? Never going to happen. My ex-roommate once pointed out
that whenever I said "maybe," I really meant "no."

Perhaps (keep your fingers crossed) the Sierra game will do really
well, and will influence people to try the RPG system that it is
based on. A bit of a stretch, but one I'm hoping for.

Time will tell, but TSR's history may be even more telling.

Found some more nwes on the TSR site (not very good I'm afraid) so I thought
    I'd post it for everyone..

Birthright, Spellfire, Dragon Dice: These lines are built on intriguing
concepts, but sales have been weak. We have some ideas
that we will be trying during the second half of this year to see what we
can do to build up these lines. If those ideas don't
work we will let the lines slip into hiaitus for a while and consider
    relaunches at a later date.

    1997 RELEASE SCHEDULE

Birthright: King of Giantdowns (Jul), Book of Priestcraft (Oct),
    Tribes/Heartless Wastes Sourcebook (Dec).

So there qwe have it..weak sales and very few products for our line this
year. Hopefully things will pick up, otherwise it looks like BR heads to
    "hiatus land.....

I think that you are right about people buying the the Boxed Set because
I did. I just got tried of waiting for the computer game and bought the
boxed set. Definitly one of the better decisions I've made with my
    money.

Does anyone remember when Realms was first released? How long did it
take for THE most popular campaign world to catch on? Birthright has
only been around a couple of years. We have to convince Wizards to wait
for a while. Birthright is, IMHO, the BEST AD&D world out there. Give
it some time. Folks will come around.

I have heard many people express concern over the wargame aspect and how
that may discourage some players. So, deemphasize the wargame. IT is a
brand new world! So far less than 10% of one continent on the entire
world has been detailed. What a fantastic opportunity for adventuring!
The most fun I had playing in the realms was before our group got all of
the boxed sets. I felt as if I were actually shaping events. Why do we
create our own worlds? TO shape events and explore a new place. The
folks who are tired of having to compete with 25 level bards for farm
land need to come to Birthright!

Of course, I am telling this to folks who already know that, but tell
you friends this track. It might spark some intrest.

    > Saying "Well, we left it up to the GMs," is possibly one of the dumbest
things I've ever heard. Answers like that frustrate me so much because they
lead immedeately to the question: Why make the world in the first place?
Why not leave everything up to the GM?

I LIKE the aspect of choice for DMs... The basic rules for ruling realms
are there, and rules for expanding realms are there, and rules for vassals
so that large realms aren't sluggish giants are there - if the player can't
use those rules to create a realm that is "an empire" (which is usually a
self-appointed title for a realm anyway!), then they don't deserve one. And
if the DM can't use those rules to predict (and create appropriate)
opposition to the player's budding "empire", then the DM should probably
hand over control of this campaign to somebody who has the necessary skills
to give the player(s) the finest role-playing experience of building an
    empire that is possible.

Anyway, these are my thoughts on the matter...
