We use them all the time, for exactly the reasons you ahve mentioned.
The problem occurs if you try to build a palace and for whatever
reason run out of money (natural disaster, war, embezzlement, etc ).
Then you have a bit of a problem, but the risk is well worth it.
Course I didn't tell my players about it...it only took them a year
of real time (roughly 4 years game) to figure that one out :)

Gotta have one ! I have a question on palaces:
What with the "5d6" GB cost for palaces ? Seems mindless to me that I
can't set the cost/size of my palace. Hence I ignore the rule.
What do others do ?
I myself just allow the player to choose the size of the palace. He chose
a palace of 45gb's, giving him a +9 diplomacy. Needless to say, it took a
while for it to get built, but he is the envy of all around him. Actually,
everyone envies his money...not the palace, well..just a bit.

Hello everyone,
I'm just a little curious about how many of you use palaces.
According to my estimates if you pay any court costs at all an
investment in a palace is well worth it. For example, if you are
paying 9 GB per domain turn for your court you should buy a
45 GB palace. It's not really that much money since you actually
pay only 1d6 GB per turn. The palace, once completed, will
now add 9 GB worth of diplomacy. Factoring in the 1 GB of
maintenance once the palace is completed you save 8 GB per
turn without losing the benefits of your court. At that rate the
palace pays itself off after just 6 turns and then _earns_ you
money each turn.

Our Ilien-Medoere alliance has a joint court in a brand new palace. It does
indeed save a lot of money, although one must be able to invest the GBs
each turn in the first place.

I roll every turn...make a bit more sense that something could
happen during the season to set back work, but it seems a little odd
that the entire palace could be constructed, and no one notice a majr
flaw until the very end
