    Elf Weapons

I have a query. I was going through the weapons and equipment list
yesterday, and I noticed that according to the weapon availablity for
each race in the rulebook gives elves shortswords (the only
sword not on the race-specific list) as their only sword. Thinking of
Gannd in War, I am curious as to whether anyone else has dealt with
    this problem?

Just to clarify, if you read the rulebook, elves lack the PH version's
visual abilities (they don't have infravision, but they can see at night
as though it were day), and have no special skills with any weapons.
Dwarves and Halflings are also changed from the PH.

I know about those changes, which are a considerable improvement, I
think - especially the halflings, but I was just asking about whether
elves could make/buy swords other than shortswords (eg. in the novel
War where Gannd carries one and elvish swords are described), not
whether they had any special abilities with them.
Except being a bunch of bloodthirsty paranoid xenophobes, of
    course (!).
