    Mass Combat????

Well, 5000 people isn't to bad. Unfortunately, I just had to un a
battle in which the contestants had 28 and 26 unitsrespectfully.
*shudder*. Talk about a nightmare. It seems that the rulers od
Roesone (the PCs) had had enough of Baron Tael's little picks and
digs (disrupting trade lines with Mhoried, crashing festivals,
inciting the Spiderfell goblins to raid northern provinces, etc)
that they decided to do something about it. This was only the second
major battle in the game, after 2 years of game time, so both parties
had sufficient time to raise money and troops (Note: Never let thief
regents get too many trade lines..it raises too much money) Needless
to say after several war moves the vast majority of the two armies
met in one province. The battle itself took about 5 hours to run,
and included many shortcuts to save time and energy. The end result
was that the PCs took controll of the southern two provinces of
Ghoere, but in return signed a treaty that prevent's them from
interfering with Ghoere's affairs anymore. Needless to say, after
this little fiasaco, I have had to work a little harder to keep army
    sizes under control

In the campaign I'm playing in, there are several "landed" regents so the
army sizes are quite large. Are latest battle, against a suped up Osoerde,
involved over 9000 men! I think battle sizes are dependent on how many
players and how many law regents you are playing with. After our campaign in
Osoerde we also came to the conclusion that war is VERY expensive,30 GB just
to move our troops around, and obviously the loss of troops can set a
    country back years...

What are the average scales of wars fought by you regents?
We had a battle recently (one of two, one has to be done next
session) wich was MAYOR! some 5,000 men in total, and one of some
2,500 to come. Guess what kind of war it was?

After the many GB spent, we made it the nice 'little' civil war of
    Osoerde.

My question was (since the bloke who wrote the article on dwarves
talked about a huge clash with only 14 units, we had some 20 to 25 in
total) how large are your average battles?

In a battle that I'm a part of I have 39 units. Needless to say, the DM is
dreading doing this war. One reason I have such a huge army is that the
church declared a holy war, and the DM decided that I don't have to pay to
maintain these holy troops, and after many months, that's what a majority of
the units are. Anyways, I just thought you'd like to hear about a massive
    army.

Believe it or not, you're about right on for warfare in 13th to 15th century
Europe. I may be mistaken, but I think there were only about 5,000 men on
each side at some of the decisive battles of the Hundred Years' War, like
Agincourt, Poitiers, and Crecy. And yes, war IS expensive...one of the best
ways to get ready for a fight is to build up a big stash of cash, so that you
can run circles around your enemies who just have to sit and wait in their
    home provinces.
