    Women, and child-rulings?

    Hiya,

For all those who know of suitible women to marry a wealthy merchant,
listen! I, Brand F. Francken, banker of the Coerannyan brand of the
Royal Guild of Baruk-Azhik, am looking for a suitible wife. Do any of
you know young (20-30), noble or otherwise distinguished daughters of
regents, wealthy merchants, other nobles and other important people I
(a human from Brecht blood and quite handsome (Cha 14), 25 years old)
could marry. I am looking for a woman with some influence (or her
family for that matter) who will bear my children. It looks like I am
the last in my line, and I don't like the thought of it!

    Sincerely yours,
    Brand

PS: how do you rule on marriage, sex and children? Does any of your
regents have a wife/husband and children? I have the Net Sex book
(great libram by the way!) and I think it would be usefull. What do
    you say?

My PC Ruler is looking into the prospect of an heir as well, and shes likes
the idea of increaseing her power with a strong political marriage(mental
note: Prespective husband might be good victim for a Doppleganger). Still
there are no real rules that work well with marriage, sex, and children.
These are complex real life issues that can only be dealt with in AD&D using
good role-playing. If done right it can be fun, but if handled badly it
becomes foolish, and distracting. After having said that there is only one
rule I do use when dealing with this subject: Everytime a PC has sex there
is a 1 in 20 chance of the female becoming pregnant. If there is a history
of twins then 1 in 20 pregnancies will be twins(the chance for triplets or
more? your on your own). Just remember you don't need a lot of rules, just a
good DM and some very good role-playing.

I have several years playing a married character. Generally the family is
treated as an NPC and a tool for the DM. In birthright I would handle it the
same way. Or if she is skilled and/or blooded you could treat her as a LT.

I have tweaked the random event chart and one outcome is now Birth. I would
check to see if any PC's eligible and convert it to pregnancy (I roll events
about a year ahead of time so they can be worked into campaign).

Incidentally, if you have a copy of the Oriental Adventures hardback, it had
some very good random event tables that can easily be adapted. I
particularly like the 'shaping' of monthly events by annual events.

On the treatment of spouses and offspring, if they are classed & NPC's I
treat them as henchmen (and they count towards the maximum # a character can
    have).
