I don't have the Endier release, but that seems outlandishly expensive given
the various costs of things in the campaign. The 1GB per asset rule is a
little 'glossing over' but I prefer it to detailed rules about x% of each
asset's value etc.

I think it was actually ment that last way: 1GB/level.

I would be inclined to set the cost at 1 GB per two castle levels, rounding
up. Having a huge castle (9) cost the same 2000 gp every three months as a
tiny castle (1) seems just a tad weird to me.

I must throw my hat in on the 1GB/level side. As a castle expands, not
only do you have more builing/upkeep cost, but more costs associated with
troops, food, staff, decor, horses, and a myriad of other concerns. I
might go as far as saying 1GB/2 levels, but that is pretty thin support
for all of the people who will be relying upon it.

How about for those castles that need troops and so forth (ie a standard
fighters). The cost to maintain is 1GB/level. But for those people who do not
need a large staff or troops (ie. mage's) that the cost to maintain his tower
is 1 GB. Now if the mage wanted to have a large castle and troops ect. then
the cost would fall in line at 1 GB/level.

scion/regent pays the maintenance for those troops, so why douple-dip
and charge the scion/regent twice for the same troops. If the
scion/regent has paid for and created the castle, pays maintenance for
any troops in it, and pays maintenance for the upkeep of his court
(which to me includes these "castle costs") then the 1 GB per castle
rule makes sense. I would be all for the 1 GB per level argument except
that there is that cost for maintenance of a court. Again, a regent
mage should be able to afford to defend his realm without having to pay
over and over again for the same pieces to the castle.

Not according to Rich Baker. He and I have already had this discussion.

I've been reading along with all the posts concerning this subject, and I
have to agree with this. It reflects the cost of having overly large
castles, that the ruler probably dosen't need. In history(I know a lot of
people hate historical references, but please bear me out)some rulers have
almost destroyed their countries by building huge elaborate castles. At
least huge, and elaborate, for their respective budgets. Some of them even
lost thier lives because of it. I like the idea of reflecting this fact in
BR, and I'm already working on a mad Duke(NPC)who will bleed his people dry
in order to construct, and maintain, an obscenely powerful fortress. By the
time the PCs notice him they will have to dig him out of his little
fortification.
