War Cards
Does anyone use the WAR CARDS for resolving mass combat? How about lead
figs and BATTLE SYSTEM rules? Other ideas? I don't like the card
system. Anyone know of a better way?

I've never actually played Birthright, but I've used Battlesystem(2nd ed)
for the past seven years to resolve mass combats in my AD&D games and it
works great! In fact, last summer I ran a Battlesystem Campaign where
each player represented a Pirate faction within the Pirate Isles of Toril,
using the battlesystem rules for the actual battles, with almost no
difficulty.
I'd reccomend it over the Card system anyday.

In the Birthright campaign that I'm in right now, we use the BATTLESYSTEM. It
can get really time consuming if the battles are really big, but is pretty
good besides that.

I use the war card. I just stack them all on top of each other and say that
the top one is the one at the front of the armies. Works ok even in large
battle for me. Most of the time anyway.

Yeah, my group hates the War Cards too. We use a modification of some
old mass combat rules from Chivalry & Sorcery (or so I was told. I've
never seen C&S and no longer know the guy who wrote our rules so I can't
ask him, but I have it on good authority.)
It's all just math. Each troop type has a numerical value, add up all
the values and add some modifications (elves in forest +10 percent,
troops foraging for food -15%, etc. . .) and do a little math. It pumps
out Victor and Loser, Percentage of the Field held by both and
Percentage Losses. It's quick, simple, yet detailed.
I posted it here a while back, so I won't do it again, it's a large
file for E-Mail but you can search the Archives or E-Mail me and I'll
send it to you.
