money and mages
Going on the thread of Thieves and their huge amounts of money,
which is by the way not true for all merchants!, one of the players
in the group I play with came with an intersting idea:
since they think I have too much money reletive to their holds (yes
I'm a merchant and indeed my livelyhood is trade and make money, hey
a priest should think about his flock to guard and to lead, what's
wrong with money for a merchant?) and they came up with the idea to
let the mage research a spell or more exactly a reversive one on the
'change lead into gold bars' spell they use to generate money. I
don't know if it already exists, but this is a tough one for a
merchant with 500 GB in his hold, is it not? "And I was sure that all
this was gold yesterday evening, and now it looks so dull and
lifeless..."
What do you say?

Look in the rulebook p.82/83. There is a description of the wizard realm
spell "ALCHEMY". Using this spell a regent wizard can generate wealth by
spending regency points. (4RP=1GB)
If you think your mage is far to poor, why not decrease the number of RP
needed for the spell, to get more cash for his regency?
I, for my self, think the rule is good, as it is...
Bye, Franz

Yes, I do agree with you that you still have to be with, or at least
have hold of the gold in order to be able to change it into lead. But
since I don't know the exact trouble a Mage regent has te create gold
from lead, I can't forsee the trouble he'll have with the reverse
spell. But remember a mage has more than one trick up his sleeve in
order to get to the gold (if he/she knows where to find it though).
And if he's there, he can easily (?) make the treasure chest of the
intended victim some worthless heap, especially if he by some cheap
way he can lay hands on the Lead Bars when the victim regent puts
them away. Then he can change them back into gold and he has the lot.
Since the change process from lead to gold takes many RP's (as I see
it, it is rather difficult to 'upgrade' the metal) the reverse of the
spell shouldn't take that much RP's. (I say that even though I fear
for my own treasure chest.) What do you say?

I think that his point was to do a reversible alchemy that would convert
the wealthy regents gold into lead, or some similarly worthless item.

yep. I am well familiar with this. My Mage has the blood ability Travel.
When a Vassal of the baron trashed one of my sources without permission, I
used Regent site to find where his home was then Traveled to it to give him a
stern talking to. He was a bit surprised.

I would have to agree with this. I would think turning gold into lead would
be alot easier and thus cost less RP.
