So, in 1997 WOTC buys TSR. The gaming industry froths over in a bubbly and
energetic frenzy. Fans of DnD freak out and start gabbing like crazy.
Doomsayers and false prophets reign supreme on rec.games.frp.dnd.

    Then the product gets better....

In August of 1999 WOTC and TSR announce a 3rd edition of DnD. Again, the
gaming community whips itself into a frenzy. Two distinct crowds form: those
loyal to 2nd edition, and those ready to embrace a 3rd. A small but
fanatical group still claims 1st is just fine. Again doomsayers and false
    prophets reign supreme on rec.games.fpr.dnd

But the ideas behind the 3rd edition don't look all that bad....

    September 9, 1999:

I get the following newsline from my pager:
"Hasbro buys Wizards of the Coast, whos product line includes Pokemon
    trading cards, for $325M..."

My friends, I am not joking. I just hit dejanews and verified. A copy of the
press release has already been crossposted there.

Things should really get interesting now. I'm going to read for a day or two
on rec.games.frp.dnd and then get back to my normal gaming.

I don't think things will ever be the same again. Though they could still
stand a chance to improve. Who's to say. Either way, this will definately
have an impact upon future product in 3rd edition for good or bad.

I'm personally looking forward to the Gorgon action figure with Super Karate
    Chop Action!

The Birthright Revival is NOW! :)
When you've had the best, why buy the rest?
[who remembers the first DnD dolls in the 80's]

From the press release at www.hasbro.com:

    > "We are very excited about this merger of the world's two greatest
    > game companies," said Peter D. Adkison, President and CEO of Wizards
    > of the Coast. "We are proud to become part of the Hasbro tradition
    > and culture, and look forward to working together to uild on the
    > strength of Hasbro's rich library of intellectual properties,"
    > Adkison added.

Hmm, Hasbro tradition and culture. 'Uncle Pennybags' as new prince of
    Avanil, maybe? 'Furby', anyone?

Seriously though, this might not be all that bad. If Microprose is
any indication, there is a fair chance they won't make any radical
changes to WotC's products. Besides, it never hurts to have a strong
economical support, and we can hope they have a better marketing
    department.

    ummmmm.... you're sick man :)

I don't know if I'm looking forward to "Ya, I play DnD. You know, that game
by Hasbro?" Damn, we're mainstream, or we will be. I liked being an
    outsider :)

    MicroProse? You mean Falcon 4.0?

Let's not use them as an indication of where WotC might go, 3e wouldn't come
    out until 2010...
