As I have touched upon earlier, regents may call upon decades, centuries and even millenia of inheritance and history in the form of magical items of power. While few such items exist, those that due are weapons of power seeped in history. Some weapons have been included in the Player Secrets books, and I have suggested others. This post is to include such ideas under a single thread.

Here is the first, the weapon of the Cariele family. I had read some time ago the write up for Cariele and included some tidbits of the story that I could recall here.

    Elfhart: Greatsword +1, Keen, Elfbane.

This ancient weapon came into the family before the dawn of Empire, when Carel carved out a land in Cerilia for himself and his followers. Carel faced great opposition from the sidhelien in his settlement efforts. A great warrior lacking in the skills of a diplomat, Carel dealt with the sidhe the only way he could; at the point of his greatsword.

Countless sidhe fell upon his blade (and later those of his descendants). Despite the efforts of the knights of the gheallie sidhe; none could defeat the human with blade in hand. At Deismaar, after the cataclysm that saw the death of the old gods, Carel slew many sidhe that chose to side with the Manslayer and his sword gained its name for his many acts of bloodtheft.

After the second battle at the Gates of Doom, the sidhe resigned in their war against the growing Empire but bad blood still reigned between the rulers of Cariele and the sidhe. An elven curse was laid upon their greatest weapon that would tie it to the very land.

When the Gladanils took power in Cariele, the remainder of House Cariele fled to Coeranys to join a branch of their family that settled there some centuries before, taking the blade along with them. In the years since, the sword's blade has dimmed and no longer exhibits some of the properties it once held.

The blade's link to the land grows fainter as generations pass and might lose all its properties altogether. However, the reverse might be true. If the latter occurs, the Keen property is substituted for the Vorpal property for Carel's propensity to behead his foes in battle.

Here is a suggestion for the Dhoesone family ancestral weapon.

    Windreaver

Hand axe of throwing and returning +2. Special: Windreaver grants an insight bonus of +5 to Survival checks within Dhoesone.

Hjalsone, the land that would one day join the Empire under the name Dhoesone, was once held by the people of Reynir. The Rjurik hunters of that land subsisted mainly on hunting, fishing, some light gathering and the occasional raiding of the wealthy southern lands of the Andu.

When Roele came to conquer the Rjurik peoples, he faced stiff resistance and was unable to hold his conquests for any significant amount of time. His adversaries learned the ways of the forest and fought under the cover of night or from the eaves of the ancient forests they had come to call home.

One of these foresters (and a raider), whose descendants would one day become the Dhoesone family, fought at Deismaar under the armies of Reynir. He had witnessed the horrible bloodshed and acts of bloodtheft that occured after the battle and grew disgusted with his fellows. A devout follower of the old god of the forests, he chose to become a hermit.

The Anuireans disturbed his solitude when their armies marched upon the Rjurik. He saw the invaders as a greedy people who sought the divine essence of the dead gods. When Roele chose to parlay with the Rjurik peoples, he was curious to see what this Emperor had to say. He forced himself into the negotiations by besting several jarls in feats of combat and strength with the aid of his axe. Finding Roele's goals noble and just, he pledged fealty to the first Emperor and became ruler of the newly renamed Dhoesone.

Since then, his axe has been passed on to each of his descendants. The frontier land of Dhoesone was demanding on the new barons who still ruled over a semi-nomadic people for the better part of several centuries. The Barons Dhoesone needed to be able to live off the land. While most would associate the bow as the primary weapon of choice for a forrester, Windreaver was far more practical not only for hunting but for other tasks such as gathering wood, making makeshift shelters, etc.

Windreaver, unlike most other ancestral arms, is in the possession of the heir as soon as he/she is of an age to carry it rather than the regent. This tradition began many centuries ago when Baron Hrolthvar Dhoesone was killed in a border skirmish with giants from the giantsdown. The weapon was recovered by his daughter when all her brothers were unable to retrieve it and paid for their failure with their lives. She became the first Baroness of Dhoesone.

With her rule, it was decided it would be the heir that would inherit the axe as a sign of the regent's choice but also, as theorized, to avoid the double blow of losing both regent and axe at once.

((Thanks to Conjurer Dragon for the name of Dhoesone prior to Imperial Rule.))

Good work on these Phil, nice unique items which I like.

By the way, it is planned that the Atlas of Cerilia will have a section for magical items. They would be mentioned in the realm's secrets, and then the full description would be in the Magical Item's seciton. So I'm also accepting submissions of magical items for the Atlas as well. They won't be subject to any form of voting process. If I like them (and it seem no one else has concerns) then they will be included.

A number of magical items are mentioned in the personalities section of Ruins of Empire, as well as in the Player's secret books and all need descriptions and a history. I am looking primarily for uniqueness though, not necessarily powerful Cerilian changing Artefacts, but if it comes with a good story and history anything is a posibility of being included.

One thing I have considered is a list of the tighmaevril weapons, or at least a partial list with descriptions.

    Glory's Fall

(In addition to what is written in the Player's Secrets of Roesone)

Glory's Fall first appears in Anuirean history when the first Elin carved out a realm out of the lands that would form Elinie. A sickness had seeped into the land with bands of goblins and gnoll marauders plaguing the surrounding lands. The sidhe faced constant threat from these humanoids and whatever vile creatures would sometimes venture out of the swamps.

Crafted by a half-elven craftsmen for House Elin, Glory's Fall burned brightly as a beacon of light in the dark land. It's intent was to cleanse the taint from the land with purifying fire. The greatest of the humanoid warlords was a devilspawned goblin whose name is lost to the millenia. Historians believe the name Glory's Fall refers to this goblin. The story behind how the mercenary lord Daen Roesone came to possess the sword is known only to a select few outside House Roesone.

In 468 MR, the remnants of the Elin family in eastern Ghoere had fallen upon hard times. Their count seized the eldest daughter of Lord Jordan Elin to marry her against her will, and that of her family's, to justify war with the Daoutas that now rule Elinie. Jordan's attempts at negotiation with the count had met an impasse, so he hired Daen Roesone's mercenary band to rescue her for a reward of 10 000 gold crowns. The mercenary lord, while skeptical, agreed and rode his army towards the count's keep.

Roesone found the count of Achiese's army had gathered for the wedding and to marshal for war against Elinie. Any frontal assault would prove disastrous. Instead, his men came under cover of darkness and set up camp as if to besiege the fortress. At the first glimpse of dawn, the count sent riders to parlay with the mercenary lord in hopes that his plans of conquest would not be hindered. Daen Roesone's aide-de-camp met the envoy and engaged in lengthy conversation. The count and his men were too distracted by preparations for battle to notice the small band, lead by Daen himself, that snuck into the castle grounds and stole Lady Saraele Elin away before she was to be wed.

At dusk, the horses of the envoys returned with dead riders. The count, enraged, ordered his men ready for a sortie at dawn when the light of Avani would be at their backs. But by then, the mercenaries had again used the darkness of night to cover their flight. The count's riders chased after the mercenary lord, but had to turn back when reaching the Elinie border. Once safe, Roesone sent bird to Jordan Elin to inform him of his daughter's rescue. Lord Elin was not as receptive to the news of the daring rescue as one would believe. He had hoped the mercenary would defeat the count through arms and refused to pay the full sum agreed upon.

Ever the mercenary, Roesone refused to relinquish the lady until the full sum would be paid. Lord Elin convinced paladins of Haelyn, hired adventurers, merrcenaries, spies and assassins to return his daughter but each attempt met in failure (due in part to secret aid from House Daouta), and in responce the ransom would grow.

Over the course of her captivity, a mutual love blossomed between Saraele and Daen. She revealed to her love the full extent of her family's treasures in hopes that he would elope with her. Instead, Roesone demanded a new ransom to Jordan: to relinquish his family's ancestral sword, crown, and a thousand crowns for the release of his daughter.

Recognizing his defeat, Jordan accepted the terms. It was later revealed he had struck an arrangement with the count of Achiese to recoup the expenses of his daughter's safe return through marriage. To everyone's surprise, Roesone accepted the treasures as dowry for Lady Elin's hand and repaid House Daouta with the crown of Elin for their aid. Six months later she gave birth to their first son, Raemel, shortly after their wedding in Caercas.

When news of this reached the count of Achiese, he slew the last of the Elin family in Ghoere but his line later died out at the hands of the Iron Guard, secretly aided by paladins of the Life and Protection of Avanalae, during Baron Tael's purges.

    Crimson Strike

Thss ancient spear is made from ironwood and a bronze spearhead that has over the ages gained an increasingly reddish hue. The ancestral weapon of House Moergan earned its name when Duke Richard Moergan confronted a hydra when out hunting in the swamps of Osoerde. The creature cornered the hunting party and slowly slew each in turn one by one until only the Duke remained. In desperation he flung the spear into one of the creature's gullets. On its own it did little harm, but then lightning struck the protruding spear and slew the beast.

When he recounted the tale to his court, many agreed that Cuiraécen blessed their liege lord. A wandering knight of the stormlord took it as miracle and dubbed it the Crimson Strike. The name has held ever since.

Currently Jaison Raenech claims the weapon as his own and as a sign of his rule. In truth, his is but a replica. In secret, the Swamp Mage and Drago Malik attempt to divine its location. The real Crimson Strike is in the possession of Wincae Raehech of the Church of Storm's Height. The night the old Duke died, the spear appeared hovering above Stormlord Raehech's private altar. He has kept it hidden until he feels William Moergan is ready to face his father's murderer.

Crimson Strike: Javelin of Lightning and Thundering +1. Special: The magic of the spear is not lost after being thrown and may be reused indefinetly. In the hands of a divine spellcaster devoted to Cuiraécen, it can be substituted as a divine focus for spellcasting.
