I did my first campaign in the Southern Coast and as well as my most recent one
(I DM only cause no one else likes BR enough). The Southern Coast is, IMO, the
best place to start a campaign. You don't have to worry about the biggies like
Avanil and Boeruine (although possibly Ghoere) but there are enough bad guys
(Spiderfell, Diemed/Roesone, etc). Here's what I did for my first campaign. I
allowed my player to customize their domains as per the back of the Rulebook.
Both were thieves. One player combined Ilien and Medoere into a single realm,
boosted province levels, and set up law and a few guilds. The other player
took the remaining guilds (except a few El-Hadid ones) and branched out into
Roesone. I think that having only one landed regent makes it easier. From
there I was able to do several very exciting adventures (the Player's Secrets
of Ilien and Medoere helped a bit). Let's see, I had an adventure where
el-Hadid was going to take over Ilien (a VERY fun adventure), one where the PCs
explored a wizard's tower that kept appearing and disappearing, one that
involved a meeting with the Seadrake (don't be rude or you'll lose a hand or
two :-), one involving the Unicorn of the Errebainien, and one with the Shadow
World and Spiderfell. I'll give more in depth explanations if you'd like.

    Here is my reply:
i like DMing a realm which has a sourcebook to it when i can:
Tournen, Talinie, Medoere, Ilien, Roesone, Endier, Tuarhievel
(although you may not want to start with this one until you feel more
comfortable about the world), and Baruk-Azhik (never got it, so can't
say how good it is). personally, i would suggest Tournen or Endier.
both have great potential, while also having lots of adventure
posibilities. i find the southern coast a bit restricting, since it is
a bit out of the way in my opinion. i like to be in the thick of
    things.

rules: find some way to make ruling provinces take a longer amount of
time than in the rulebook. by a *lot*. it is way too easy for someone
to get lots of high provinces IMO. also think about TR rules, for
guilders. maybe make it harder by a bit (not too much, but some) than
    in the rulebook.

Yeah, I had to reread the warcard rules several times before I got them. I know that
several people have adapted other war systems to BR so if you know any others, they
    might work better.

Oh, and go to http://www.tsr.com/ADND/Downloads.html right now and download
the BR pronociation guide before you invent your own pronounciations. It is REALLY
hard to say em right after months of saying them wrong. I only recently started
saying awn-shay-lin instead of my wierd awn-sheg-lien and I haven't broken the habit
of saying An-uire when it should be An-wier. Not to mention Sidhe, Sidhenlien,
Tuahievel, Alamie (A-lam-ie-ay not Al-a-mie), Tighmaevril, meghbable (which I can't
even spell), Dhoesone (Thoe-sone), and every other name.

I was thinking to start in Roesone or medoere, a small kingdom must be more
manageable. I just read the Domain Actions/War cards section and I'm a little

My suggestion would be to go to the site of a good PBEM and read the
rules of those through. Of coarse, they might contain a little too much
optional rules for a beginner, but that is for you to judge. For
instance, I personally favor the "contested rule" as opposed to the
normal "contest" rule. The secret holdings are also rules that good to
use, if you want to use more subtle way's of opposing the PC's. For a
good PBEM I would suggest: http://www.angelfire.com/in/cerilia/

As for a good domain to start, that would be highly dependend on the
type of game you like. In Anuire I personally favor Dhoesone, a lot of
guilds for the intrigue, the elves and goblins for diplomacy and the
Five Peaks, the Giantdowns and the Gorgons Crown for monster bashing
adventures. Not to mention that is somewhat outside the main action,
leaving the big guys Avanil, Boeruine and Ghoure out of the game for the
start. Then again, I don't like Anuire that much and prefer the Khinasi
or the Brecht. It might also be advisable to start with normal
adventurers as lieutenants of one or two regents, maybe the heir or so?
That is how I started with Birthright...

A good advise would also to join a PBEM, I learned a huge amount of the
rules and their effect from this.
