warding spell
Hello Birthrighters, Adam Theo here. 9:15 PM, 5/7/1999.
here's a suggestion for the warding offensive/defensive debate.
for those people who feel the warding spell should be for defense
only, and is way too powerful for an offensive spell, then how's this:
the warding spell can only be cast upon a province where the
province owner allows it to happen. if he doesn't allow it, it can't
happen, except with maybe some great exception.

While people are fine to do as they please and ignore me :)
In the BR game from Sierra, which tried to stick to the facts of the
setting as much as it could; I have had numerous provinces
warded against my will, and because of that learned to do the
same offensively. There are still constraints on where you
(the wizard) can do it; I belive you had to have a source in the
target province. Outside of that, anything goes!
Offensive use is OK too. In truth, I don't think it would be done
a lot. It's probably just me, but I think that would be way to
far from the low magic spirit of the setting. These realm
spells should only be cast when it's of the utmost
importance.
Course, wouldn't it be funny to permanently ward the province
in which the Sword and Crown is held while all the regents
are there??? :) This would either allow for mayhem as petty
nobles scramble for power in their masters absence; or it
would make the world a better place. Kinda like nuking
washington DC

I can see you have never played PBEM's. Warding is one of the most used
realm spells in several games I have played in. When you run a table-top
game you have a lot more influence on what happens then in a PBEM and in
those games "warding" is not much of a problem.
As for using the computer game as an example, don't get me started on
that. When I hear that people are able to conquer neighbors by forming
alliances by paying a lot of money and then betraying them again and
again, I begin to wonder how realistic a game is.

It has always been my theroy that magic in Cerilia worked similarly to the
channeling rules in PO:S&M. A wizard draws upon the meghable (sp) and directs
that energy into his spells. Meghable is more fluent? than your typical
channeling energy so a wizard doesn't need to sit around for hours gathering
spell energy. Yet to draw on certain levels of meghable you need to be more
godlike. A non-blooded human simply can't handle the meghable required for
True Magic spells. I allow my magicians to add True Magic spells to thier
books if they make a learn spells check at one-quarter thier normal roll. If
they do decide to cast the spell, they draw more meghable than they can
handle. The effect is that the spell is cast but the magician is disintegrated
(as per Aes Sedai drawing too much on the True Source or Protoss Templar like
Tassasar drawing too much Psionic energy). As you can guess, not a commonly
used option. Blooded charachters and elves are closer to gods so they can
handle True Magic w/o trouble. But realm magic becomes a stretch (here come
the non-tested parts). Blooded elves and human wizards with Major or Great
bloodlines exceeding 40 in strength (the bloodline requirement is only for
humans) are godly enough to handle meghable without any adverse effects. All
others capable of realm magic are not godly enough. After casting a realm
spell, those with a less-strong bloodline must rest for one month and only use
Lesser Magic. If the wizard casts True Magic than he must rest another month.
If he uses many or high level True Magic spells spells (DM's judgement) or
casts another realm spell, he is disintigrated. This method give elves and
those with strong bloodlines (and such bloodlines should be rare) greater
realm-spell casting power. It also gives those regent wizards of lesser
bloodlines an important reason to raise thier bloodline.

You are right. I've only tried to play one BR pbem and by the time the
person
running it got in touch with me I had forgotten I had entered and was too
busy
to play. Life is rough. I don't see how this relates though. There is an
obvious
spirit of low magic use in the rulebooks. If you allow people to cast
Warding
all the time in your game/pbem so be it. Me? I'd politely tell the player to
learn
another tack through the hands of an NPC wizard working against his source
holdings enough to diminish his ability to cast Warding (I don't know it's
stats,
but if you ain't got the source, you ain't got the spell). I think most
wizards would
object to such an overhanded use of magic, if used in a regular fashion.
This
kinda violates the code of keeping magic mysterious and therefore powerful
in Cerilia.
This takes a lot from my own interpertation, but what else do I have.
