    Birthright.net domain name

    > >From what I saw earlier, it only costs $70 to purchase such a name??

It costs about $70 to register the name. Then you've got to pay an annual fee
to keep that name. Domainnames.com goes for $150 and that includes two years
worth of the name. As far as I understand (which isn't very far), this address
(http://www.birthright.net) can either act as a redirector (when you type in
    www.birthright.net it transfers you to
http://www.chariot.net.au/~hoss/birthright/) or the domain name can be installed
into the server (which costs money with most hosts because it takes work). So
with the latter option you could get Geocities (hypothetically, I don't know if
they allow this) to install www.birthright.net on their server (for some $$) and
then your page is access from www.birthright.net but is still on the same hard
disk (or whatever) at geocities as it was when you had the long geocities
address. From what I've read, many free servers (Geocities, Tripod, etc) will
discontinue service if your free page is "linked" to from a regular domain name
(the former option described above) or if it gets too many hits.

    Am I right here?

    Hullo!

I am basically at the same level as Craig on this I think. It sounds great, but
I have no idea how to go about this. Huuurrr??

I do have a cable modem connection, but as far as I am aware, it just loads
information quickly. I was not aware it would allow you to do that other stuff
Craig was talking about. I have a total of 15 megs of web space through my
server (all add free) but the downside is that it only allows for a certain
amount of traffic in a month. Once this limit is reached, the site shuts down
until the following month. So far, I have only used about 3 megs of this space,
so there's lots of room left though.

I don't really feel comfortable collecting the money personally, and I have no
idea how to go about getting domain names and registering that to web space and
all that yadda yadda. I could send you a few of the lovely Canadian Toonies to
help out with drive though. (Toonie = $2.00 Canadian Coin for those not in the
    know.....) ;)
I think Simon has the right angle on the 'organization' of the web site too. If
it's all in the same spot, it's easily found, and also saves the surfer from
having to load multiple pages. (For those folks who have to pay by the second,
this would be a bonus I think).

    PS.
Sorry for the delay on this, PBeM turns are due on Monday/Tuesday... ;)

I'm not so into cable-modem systems, as this hasn't been officially released in
sweden, but one important thing is that you "must" have a static address (same
ip-number all the time) to be able of using a domain name in the right way
(there are tricks to come around, but you don't have full controll of events). I
know that some cable-modem system (as the one soon introduced by telia) uses
dynamic addresses, which demands that you can update the database of a dns
    everytime you reconnect.
Runing server on you computer are the easy things to do (apache is simple to
install and modify, so a http server can be setup within 10 mins).

If you had done a "whois" on "birtright.com", you would have got the following
infomation about the owner of the domain name:

Country/Area: USA & International Commercial. Whois Server:
    whois.internic.net

    Registrant:
    Virtualchemy Inc. (BIRTHRIGHT4-DOM)
    163 E Main Street, Suite 251
    Little Falls, NJ 07424

    Domain Name: BIRTHRIGHT.COM

Administrative Contact, Technical Contact, Zone Contact:
    Jamieson, Kenneth (KJ2295) soulhuntre@SOULHUNTRE.COM
