    Another thought - these storms could be drawing the magic out of items and using it to replenish the land. Back to my Aebrynnis rebelling concept. Point being that magic wasn't originally held in items something or most often someone took the mebhaiel out of the land (or worked it, depends on concepts here) and "trapped" it in an item.
