Cleverness is clearly Int, not Wis. The classic definitions were:
Intelligence is knowing exactly how to put your head in the lion's mouth.
Wisdom is not doing it.
Clever is given as bright, but not necessarily sound. Thus intelligence, not
wisdom.
So the player whose PC has low WS or Int should not be doing anything
bright. To do so is indeed poor roleplay. Your triple 3, triple 18 fighter
should walk right into the trap, for the 5th time, unless that 18 int mage
stops him.
Succeeding with minimum ability and equipment can be fun, but it is not
roleplay, which can easily require failure.
