Actually it is taken from a little farther back. The ideas expressed in the
alignment system (especially the idea of non-relative good and evil) are
long ancient principles held true until the dawn of modernity (18th
century). The alignment system is Baconian (refering to Francis Bacon who
held that moral standards were absolute and mandated by heaven). To deny
that is Kantian (refering to Immanuel Kant who first systematically argued
for the relativism we experience today.

As I said in a previous post, when I want a modern sensibility in RPG's, I
look to one set in a modern period.
