    A silly question

    Hey everybody:

I have a question for all you folks, especially from the listers who
live in Norway, Denmark, or Sweden, or anyone who has visited those
    countries:

Has anyone ever heard of a raven-haired Norse warrior? Is this from the
demented mind of one of my players or were there actually a few dark
haired vikings in the annals of history?

(One of my players has this idea for a black haired Rjurik warrior - why
I can't fathom ... as usual for such a crazy notion, I got sucked into a
stupid arguement with one of my players about black hair and Norse dudes
being an impossiblity, but I thought I might get a second insight from
    you good people).

    Cheers,
    Darren

Sounds familiar. I had a player who wanted Silver hair. My answer: Bloodmark.

    Hey, it works.

After all you've got the classical looting viking which grabs a few
    dark-haired females from
Ireland, Scotland or other suitable place and then brings her back as slave
    (nor: trell). She then
ends up with a child and after a generation or two her grandson is a viking
    himself, presto a
dark-haired viking... Of course I don't have any real proof or anything for
    this idea, but it
does seem a very realistic scenario to me. At least real enough to be of
    good use in a campaign.
Anyway the player would have to come up with a good story of course
    himself. Other Olesen's
    idea is good too....

IIRC the Rjurik Highlands says in the section on special dooms that
Rjurik bersekers almost always have black hair. So I suppose it
    should be possible.
Otherwise the bloodmark idea should work.

    A silly question

I'm by no means an expert, and even somewhat lacking in knowledge of my own
family knowlege, but I'm Scottish and by wife is Swedish, both of us have
    dark hair.
My family has been in America now for about 50 years so we're daluted, but my
wife is a Swedish citizen and her hair is about as raven as hair could get. I
know that in pictures of her as a child, she had blond hair until she was
about 13 or so. Both her parents are blond hair, go figure.

I think the slave theory is most probable and I think if works well expecially
if a Rjuik (sp?) originated near the Brecht, elven lands.

    Yes, thanks!

Yes, that makes sense; I've just always held the impression that
everyone in Sweden is blonde, for example ... :) I guess thats just a
    popular misconception!

blonde naturally...remember that blondness often comes from the hair
getting bleached in the sun. But of course Chlorine can do wonders for
    haircolor :)

    I'll stop now, I'm getting way off-topic...

Most common descriptions of Norse warrirors tells about blond and red
hear, but if I don't remember my Asatro from elementry school, one of
the Norse gods had black hair.

It's not that common with descriptions of hair/eye color, it's only when
someone has an unusual coloring when the color is mentioned.

I think I dare to say that most of the people in this region had brown
hair and green/brown eyes in those days.
