Wonder if its possible to release the products on an "by order"
basis..meaning they advertise the products they would be willing to sell,
have people/stores order the products, and those that get enopugh orders
to be seen as profitable are produced...heh..business management isn't any
strong point of mine, so there are doubtless numerous problems with this
    that I just don't know about...*shrug*

Many board style wargames are now being sold this way, and no shipments are
made until 300 requests are made.

Well, it wasn't my intention to make it sound like a bad thing - or as a
good thing, for that matter. I was just relayin what I had read on the
    TSR web site.

From what I heard TSR did make money off Birthright they just didn't
make enough money. I talked to Skip Williams, and he mentioned that
while they lost money on a few products, they made money overall. I
think the worst problem TSR had was with promoting it. They tend to
focus mainly on worlds like FR, Dragonlance ETC. On worlds they know
will sell, instead of trying to sell the other worlds they have.

Thought I'd pop in on this. I don't think the only problem lay in
promoting Birthright. They also have a problem of focus. All the other
canceled settings seem to lose what it was they initially appealed to
player with. The idea of standard fantasy is easy enough to understand
but Birthright (and others) that don't fit that idea always seem to
waver. I think they ended Birthright before focus was completely lost.
That's where I see TSR's biggest problem, not that their settings don't
have appeal only they don't know how to cultivate that appeal. They
remain with worlds that sell because those are worlds they find easiest
to understand themselves. Sort of like they paint themselves into a
corner and don't know what to do with them.
